Which CSCS card do I need?

The CSCS card you need depends on two things: the qualifications you hold and the job you do on site. Pick the wrong one and your application can be delayed or refused, so it's worth getting right first time.

Start with your qualifications

CSCS cards are matched to recognised construction qualifications. The higher your qualification level, the higher the card you can apply for. Almost every card also needs a pass in the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test taken within the last two years.

• No construction qualification yet: Green Labourer card (CITB Operatives test + Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment).
• NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or a completed apprenticeship: Blue Skilled Worker card.
• NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in your craft: Gold Advanced Craft card. Supervisors with a relevant supervisory qualification: Gold Supervisory card.
• NVQ/SVQ Level 5, 6 or 7 in construction management: Black Manager card.

Then check the job you'll be doing

Your card should reflect the work you actually do. A labourer with no trade qualification applies for the Green card, even with years of experience. A qualified bricklayer working as a bricklayer applies for the Blue card. If you move into supervision or management, you'll need a qualification at that level before you can move up to Gold or Black.

Which CITB test goes with which card?

Check the exact version before you book. Sitting the wrong test is one of the most common reasons applications get held up.

• Green, Blue and Gold Advanced Craft: usually the Operatives test (some trades take a specialist test).
• Gold Supervisory and Black Manager: usually the Managers & Professionals test.

How long do CSCS cards last?

Green, Blue, Gold and Black cards are typically valid for five years. To renew, you'll normally need a recent CITB HS&E test pass and must still meet the card's qualification requirements.
