Overview
What is the CITB HS&E test?
The CITB Health, Safety & Environment test is a computer-based, multiple-choice test that checks you understand how to work safely on a construction site. It covers topics such as your legal responsibilities, accident reporting, manual handling, working at height, hazardous substances, PPE and environmental awareness.
A pass is required for most CSCS cards and must have been achieved within the two years before you apply. You'll normally receive your result on the day.
Which version of the test do you need?
The version depends on the card you're applying for and your role on site:
- Operatives test: labourers and tradespeople, including Green Labourer, Blue Skilled Worker and most Gold Advanced Craft applicants.
- Managers & Professionals test: supervisors, site managers and other professionals, including Black Manager card applicants.
- Specialist tests: some trades, such as plumbing, demolition, highway works and working at height, have their own specialist versions.
Who needs to book the CITB test?
You'll need to book the test if you're applying for your first CSCS card, if you're renewing a card and your last pass is more than two years old, or if you're moving up to a card that needs a different version of the test. Sitting the wrong version is one of the most common reasons applications are delayed, so we confirm the right one before booking.

What is the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test?

Which version of the CITB test do I need?

How long is a CITB test pass valid for?

What happens if I fail the CITB test?

Is the CITB test the same as the Level 1 course?
No. The CITB HS&E test is a short computer-based test. The Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment is a separate qualification, needed for the Green Labourer card as well as the test.
