How to pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test

The CITB Health, Safety & Environment test is a computer-based multiple-choice test that most CSCS card applicants must pass. With the right preparation it's very passable. Here's how to approach it.

Book the right version

There are different versions of the test. Most labourers and tradespeople take the Operatives test, while supervisors, managers and professionals usually take the Managers & Professionals test. Some trades, such as plumbing, demolition or highway works, have specialist tests. Your card type decides which one you need.

Know what the test covers

The questions cover the core health, safety and environmental topics you'll meet on site. Expect questions on areas such as:

• Your legal and personal responsibilities
• Accident reporting and first aid
• Health risks such as dust, noise, vibration and hazardous substances
• Manual handling and personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Working at height, excavations and confined spaces
• Electrical safety, fire prevention and site vehicles
• Environmental awareness and waste

Revise with the official material

Use the official CITB revision material for your version of the test. Work through the questions by topic rather than memorising answers, because questions can be worded differently on the day. Short, regular revision sessions in the week before your test work better than a single cram session.

On the day

• Arrive early and bring the valid photo ID you booked with. Without it you may not be allowed to sit the test.
• Read every question and every answer option fully before choosing.
• Watch for questions asking for more than one answer.
• Flag hard questions and come back to them. Don't run down the clock.

After the test

You'll usually get your result on the day. A pass can be used to apply for a CSCS card for two years. If you don't pass, you can rebook, and your result helps you focus your revision.
