Overview
What is the Level 1 Award?
The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment is a nationally recognised entry-level qualification. It gives you the core health and safety knowledge you need to work safely on a building site, and it's the qualification most people use to get their first CSCS card.
The course is typically delivered in one day by an approved training provider and finishes with a short multiple-choice assessment. The qualification doesn't expire.

- Identifying hazards and understanding risk assessments
- Manual handling and safe lifting
- Working at height, excavations and site vehicles awareness
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Hazardous substances, noise, dust and vibration

Who needs the Level 1 course?
You need the Level 1 Award if you're applying for the Green Labourer card and don't already hold an accepted equivalent qualification. Yes. To get the Green Labourer card you need the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (or an accepted equivalent) and a pass in the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Operatives test.

It is typically delivered in one day, followed by a short multiple-choice assessment.
Does the Level 1 Award expire?
