Two Training Routes When You Apply Red CSCS Trainee Card

There are two official routes available.


1. Five-Year Trainee Card (Non-Renewable)

This route is designed for people who are currently registered on a competence-assessed or academic qualification.

You can apply Red CSCS Trainee Card under this route if you are enrolled on:

  • NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or above

  • Construction-related HNC

  • Construction-related HND

  • Construction-related Degree

Important rule

You are expected to complete your qualification before the card expires.
This card cannot be renewed. You must upgrade to a Blue or Gold CSCS card.


2. Two-Year Trainee Card (Renewable)

This route is for applicants who already hold a non-competence assessed qualification.

You can apply Red CSCS Trainee Card if:

  • You achieved an approved Level 2 or higher construction qualification

  • The qualification was completed within the last five years

This card is valid for two years.
When it expires, you can apply for a further three-year Trainee card if you provide evidence that you are now registered for an NVQ, SVQ or an agreed alternative qualification.
